Although this extension has been reported as “including $9.5 million fully guaranteed“, in new money he is only getting $6.5 million guaranteed. The other $3 million comes from his 2020 base salary that existed in his previous contract. This is money that McManus was highly likely to earn regardless of an extension. The new money guarantees come via a $2.5 million signing bonus, a 2021 base salary of $1.075 million, and a roster bonus of $2.925 million that is due “presumably the 3rd or 5th day of the league year”.
As far as cash flows go, this a favorable structure for the Broncos. Although the signing bonus does get some money to him immediately–as well as a roster bonus to advance some of his 2021 salary, McManus will rank either 4th or 5th in running totals through the entirety of the contract as compared to existing top kicker contracts, and that rank could fall farther if other kickers earn larger extensions in the coming year.
